Schauspieler Tom Mix

Tom Mix wurde am  6. Januar 1880 als Thomas Hezikiah Mix in Mix Run, Pennsylvania, USA, geboren. Im April 1898 trat er während des Spanisch-Amerikanischen Krieges in die Armee ein.

Er nahm jedoch während seiner Dienstzeit in der US-Armee an keinen Kampfhandlungen teil, da seine Einheit nicht nach Übersee verschifft wurde.

Während seines Urlaubes heiratete er am 18. Juli 1902 Grace I. Allin und vergaß danach,  zu seiner Einheit zurückzukehren.

1903 wurde seine Ehe annulliert und Mix aus der Armee entlassen. 1905 folgte die Heirat mit Kitty Jewel Perinne von der er sich aber 1906 auch wieder scheiden ließ.

Mix arbeitete  in verschiedenen Jobs und tourte von 1906 bis 1909 als Cowboy in diversen Wild-West-Shows durch die Vereinigten Staaten.

1907 heiratete er  mit Olive Stokes seine dritte Ehefrau, von der er sich aber  nach zehn Jahre wieder scheiden ließ. Am 13. Juli 1912 wurde ihre gemeinsame Tochter Ruth geboren.

Da die Selig Polyscope Company 1917 in Zahlungsschwierigkeiten geriet, wechselte Tom Mix zusammen mit seiner vierten Frau Victoria Forde zur Fox Film Corporation, und drehte 1917 mit "HEARTS AND SADDLES" und "A ROMAN COWBOY" seine ersten beiden Fox-Western.

Mit seinem Pferd TONY (THE WONDERHORSE)  wurde Mix der neue Star des Westernfilms und avancierte Anfang der 1920er Jahre zum ersten Western-Megastar der Filmgeschichte. Millionen von amerikanischen Kindern wuchsen mit Mix und seinem Wunderpferd auf.

Seine Westernfilme waren zwar  nicht für ihren Realismus bekannt, dafür erreichten sie mit ihren zuschauerfreundlichen Action, den Pferdestunts (die Mix alle selbst machte) und den auffälligen Westernkostümen einen großen Unterhaltungswert beim Kinopublikum. Tom Mix wöchentliches Gehalt stieg bei Fox in den 1920er Jahren auf 17.500 Dollar pro Film.

1929 drehte Tom Mix mit "THE DRIFTER" und "THE BIG DIAMOND ROBBERY" seine letzten beiden Stummfilmwestern.

Zwischen 1929 und 1931 trat Mix im „Sells Floto“-Circus auf und erhielt dafür ein wöchentliches Gehalt von 20.000 Dollar.

Am 24. Dezember 1931 ließ er sich von seiner Ehefrau Victoria Forde (mit der er Tochter Thomasina  zusammen hatte) scheiden.

Anfang der 1930er Jahre wechselte der Westernstar zu Universal Pictures und drehte 1931 mit "TOM RECHNET AB" (Originaltitel: Destry Rides Again) seinen ersten Tonfilm-Western.

Ein Jahr später folgte mit "RUSTLER’S ROUNDUP" (1932) sein letzter Film für die Universal Studios.

1935 drehte Tom Mix mit dem Western-Serial "TOM MIX, DER WUNDERREITER" (Originaltitel: The Miracle Rider) seinen letzten Western, für das er 40.000 Dollar erhielt.

Danach zog sich der Westernstar nach 279 Filmen aus dem Filmgeschäft zurück und  trat zusammen mit seiner ältesten Tochter Ruth in seinem eigenen Circus auf, mit dem er 1938 mit einer Promotion-Tour nach Europa ging.

Tom Mix verstarb am 12. Oktober 1940 bei einem Autounfall in Florence, Arizona, USA.
